The West Florida Golf Tour kicked off its 2011 year at the beautifully manicured East Course at Laurel Oak Country Club Monday afternoon. Matt Cooney, a Tampa resident, fired a (-6) 66 and won his first professional event in playoff fashion. He bested Walker Kinne, who also shot (-6) 66, on the first playoff hole. Cooney hit his approach shot to the par 4 11th within 3feet of the hole and calmly tapped in for birdie. It wound up being the difference as Kinne narrowly missed his birdie attempt and had to settle for par.
Both players finished ahead of the log jam at (-5) 67, which was shared by Seath Lauer, Travis Perkins and Tour Championship winner Tommy Rymer. Finishing behind them in a tie for sixth were Steve Thomas, Taylor Stewart and Mike Beaver. They all finished at (-4) 68's.
The win moved Cooney into third place alone on the "Race to the Ritz-Carlton" standings and the second place finish catapulted Kinne into solo forth. Everyone is still chasing Erik Barnes who sits atop the standings with 39 events to go before match play begins. The players are in for a treat as our next two events are at the magnificent Ritz-Carlton Members Club in Sarasota, FL. |
