Josh McCumber was hoping his previous two events on the West Florida Golf Tour didn't end like his first two did, "in a playoff defeat." And after another brilliant round at Old Corkscrew Golf Club left him in his third playoff in as many events, things were looking all to familiar. But when his 20 footer dropped on the first playoff hole, all the old memories were gone and his name was added to the first time winners list on the WFGT. His (-2) 70 was good enough for a tie in regulation play with Brett Bergeron. A tie that was eventually broken on the par 4, 437 yard first.
Finishing solo third was Jim Chancey at (+1) 71. Chancey recently played well at the United States Senior Open in Washington, making the cut and finishing in a tie for 51st. Rounding out the top 5 were previous winners Justin McCarraher (+2) 74 and David Steele (+5) 75.
Old Corkscrew played havoc with the players for most of the day, with only two players breaking par and (+4) 76 earning a last place check. The course, which played around 7,000 on Thursday, was a real treat for many of the players that hadn't seen it before. "I can't believe we just played a mini tour event at a place this nice", said one player. Just another of the many great venues that play host to WFGT events. Kingsway Golf Club, another one of those venues, is up next this Sunday! |
