It was that time a year again, the one time a year where we visit Old Corkscrew Golf Club in Estero, FL. This truly unique golf course never fails to disappoint in providing the biggest test for our players. This year was no different with many players feeling the wrath of this Nicklaus classic proving that the phrase, "I got Corkscrewed," isn't just a t-shirt they sell in the Pro Shop.
It was obvious that it was going to take some outstanding golf to clinch the title this year and Doug Letson didn't disappoint winning by an astounding 6 shots, while in the process claiming his third title this summer. His second round competitive course record of (-6) 66 included a back nine (-7) 29 which pretty much sealed the deal after 36 holes. Letson broke the previous course record held by Samuel Chavez, who ironically only held it for a mere 24 hours after his first round of (-5) 67. Unfortunately for Chavez he was unable to capitalize on that and finished in a tie for second with Daniel Mazziotta and Miami's Jason Burstyn. But this week like many others this summer belonged to Letson, who seems to be peaking at the right time heading into Q-School next month.
The Tour would like to express its gratitude to Old Corkscrew and its staff for all the hospitality throughout the week. We are fortunate to be able to compete on such a championship venue.
