It was fitting that the West Florida Golf Tour's first winner, Joey Lamielle, was also accepting a winner's check as the Tour reached a very impressive milestone of its own. The WFGT eclipsed the $100,000 dollar mark in prize money on Sunday afternoon in just 32 events! "Without the support of our players, a milestone like this would not be possible. I always believed the Tour would be a success, just didn't think it would come this fast!" said Tour Owner Carl Wakey. The WFGT has also provided its venues with over $50,000 in club revenue throughout its inaugural year, a number that will continually grow and is also something the Tour can hang its hat on.
The irony lost in all the milestones was that the event at Kingsway Sunday almost didn't happen. Kingsway was hammered with 3 1/2 inches of rain in a 45 minute period this morning and almost wasn't able to host the 30 players that made the trip. Kingsway's staff did what it could and the tournament started on time. Once the event was underway, Lamielle was up to his old tricks carding 5 birdies on his way to a (-4) 68. A number that almost wasn't good enough, until U.S. Open participant Travis Hampshire doubled the last for a (-3) 69. A 69 that dropped him into a threeway tie for second with Danny Evelyn and last weeks winner Josh McCumber.
Next week the Tour will look to start a new milestone as it heads to Heritage Oaks on Saturday and The Ritz-Carlton Members Club on Sunday! |
